1. Sri Adi Sankara had the divine qualities to visualize the immeasurable (“அடிமுடி காணா”) Parameshwara. Sankara looks at Him as a combination of two entities. Siva is what he is, due to the seamless integration of Shakti (Uma). This unique vision makes Sankara start the subject with a prayer and Namaskar to the Universal Parents always describing them in Unison as evidenced by the usage of Sanskrit word for dual “Ubhyaam”
2. After listening to the various treatise available on the first verse, I ventured and wrote my first Tamil Version of the verse. I was immensely happy at my maiden attempt to bring out the meanings of all the Sanskrit words in the verse, not unduly bothering about Tamil Poetry norms & rules. ( I have already declared my poor knowledge about that in my introductory blog). Subsequently after a few days, I was listening to a discourse on “Peria Puranam (பெரிய புராணம்)” by Ilangai Jayaraj where he was explaining the significance of the opening word ” Ulagelaam (உலகெலாம்)”. Then I decided to retune my work. This also reinforces my belief that I am a novice and need to learn.
3. Who am I in front of the learned & the Great Bhagwad Paadaa Sankaraacharya; just a speck of dust. How can I see the Universal Parents. No way; yet the Acharya himself gives me an idea through the famous 5 verses of his work “Matru Panchakam”. Yes – See the Universal parents in your Mother who provides the power to your father. They are the living integrated version of the Universal Parents.
4. Therefore I dedicate this opening verse of Sivananda Lahari to the Gods who lived with us for nearly a century of years – my parents .
Verse 1
कलाभ्यां चूडालङ्कृतशशिकलाभ्यां निजतपः
फलाभ्यां भक्तेषु प्रकटितफलाभ्यां भवतु मे
शिवाभ्यामस्तोकत्रिभुवनशिवाभ्यां हृदि पुन –
र्भवाभ्यामानन्दस्फुरदनुभवाभ्यां नतिरियम्
உலகெலாம் உரைகலைவடிவப் பிறைசிகையனிப் பெரியோனே,
உயர்தவப்புரி பலன் வடிவுறை பக்தருக்கருள்வோனே, மூவுலகு
செழித்திட உயர்கருணைபொழி முதல்வோனே, ஊற்றெடுக்கும்
உம் தோற்றம் பேரின்பநிறை அனுபவமென எம் இதயமதில்,
போற்றிடுவோம் உன் நாமம் அனுதினமும் உமையொரு பாகனே !

गलन्ती शम्भो त्वच्चरितसरितः किल्बिषरजो
दलन्ती धीकुल्यासरणिषु पतन्ती विजयताम्
दिशन्ती संसारभ्रमणपरितापोपशमनं
वसन्ती मच्चेतोहृदभुवि शिवानन्दलहरी
உன் மெய்ஞானவரலாறு வடிதாரையென பெரிகிடும் ஆறாகி,
எம்பாவப்புழுதி களைந்து, அடியாரின் மனத்தடாகம் நிறைந்து,
பிறவிப்பிணி தீரத் தேடி அலைந்து திரியும் என் மனமடு அடைந்து
சிவப்பேரின்ப அலையாய் வெற்றி பெரும் என் பரமனே, சங்கரனே!

त्रयीवेद्यं हृद्यं त्रिपुरहरमाद्यं त्रिनयनं
जटाभारोदारं चलदुरगहारं मृगधरम् ।
महादेवं देवं मयि सदयभावं पशुपतिं
चिदालम्बं साम्बं शिवमतिविडम्बं हृदि भजे ॥ ३॥
மும்மறைவடி மனநிறை முக்கண்ணனே முப்புரம்எரி முதல்வோனே
சடைமுடிதரி ஊரும்அரவு ஆரம்அணி மானேந்தியோனே
அரகனின்ஆதியே கருணாகரனே உயிரினத்தலையோனே
சித்திவடிவமே உமையன்னை கொழுநனே கூற்றோனே என்
இதயத்தில் உனைஏற்றி வணங்கிடுவேன் சிவபெருமானே!

सहस्रं वर्तन्ते जगति विबुधाः क्षुद्रफलदा
न मन्ये स्वप्ने वा तदनुसरणं तत्कृतफलम् ।
हरिब्रह्मादीनामापि निकटभाजामसुलभं
चिरं याचे शम्भो तव पदाम्भोजभजनम् ॥ ४॥
ஆயிரம் தேவர்கள் அளித்தாலும் சிறிதன்றோ அவ்வரம் யாவும் இவ்வுலகில்,
சென்றதில்லை அவர்பின், கண்டதில்லை அக்கனிகள் யாவும் என் கனவில்
பிரம்மனும் மாயவனும் அருகிருந்தும் உன் அருள் கிட்ட கண்டிடுவார் கடினம்
சிரம் தாழ்த்தி வேண்டுகின்றேன் உன் பொன்மலர் பாதம் தொழுதிட எப்பொழுதும்

स्मृतौ शास्त्रे वैद्ये शकुनकवितागानफणितौ
पुराणे मन्त्रे वा स्तुतिनटनहास्येष्वचतुरः ।
कथं राज्ञां प्रीतिर्भवति मयि कोऽहं पशुपते
पशुं मां सर्वज्ञ प्रथित कृपया पालय विभो ॥ ५॥
சரித்திரமறியேன் சாத்திரமறியேன் மருந்தறியேன் மந்திரமறியேன்
கவியறியேன் காலமறியேன் இசையறியேன் இலக்கணமறியேன்
சட்டமறியேன் புகழ்ச்சிஅறியேன் நடனமறியேன் நகையறியேன்
திறமையிலான் யான் எங்கனம் பெறுவேன் அரசர்தம் பரிசதனை?
கட்டுண்ட மிருகமன்றோ யான் காற்றிடுவாய் எம்பிரானே உம்
கருணை கொண்டு, போற்றிடுவேன் உன் நாமம் அனுதினமே!
