Figure of speech for the Figureless (Sivananda Lahari Verse 58 – 60)

American Management Association in its website, brings out this interesting prelude to How to manage the Boss”:

“Realize that you are more dependent on your boss than your boss is on you, because your boss holds the key to your short-term future. You need to take the initiative to set expectations. It’s your responsibility to say when you’re not feeling heard. The good news is that no matter how well or poorly you have managed your boss’s relationship in the past, you can recraft your relationship on every new endeavour . Ideally, you want to create a relationship where talking from the heart is the norm.”

Wonder what has this to do with a “spiritual stuff” that we are dealing with! Adi Sankara is handling a bigger challenge; he needs to manage the only Invisible Boss of the Universe. Heart to heart talk, Creativity, imagination and initiative which are essential in managing the relationship, brings out the poetic expertise of Adi Sankara in the following Verses where he uses extensively metaphors & similes in the communication that emanates from his heart.

Just to refresh “ A metaphor (உருவகம்) is a figure of speech that, for rhetorical effect, directly refers to one thing by mentioning another. It may provide clarity or identify hidden similarities between two ideas. A simile (உவமை) is a figure of speech that directly compares two things”.

Here is Adi Sankara using real life examples and seeking His Divine Intervention

Verse 58

एको वारिजबान्धवः क्षितिनभो व्याप्तं तमोमण्डलं

भित्वा लोचनगोचरोऽपि भवति त्वं कोटिसूर्यप्रभः ।

वेद्यः किन्न भवस्यहो घनतरं कीदृग्भवेन्मत्तम-

स्तत्सर्वं व्यपनीय मे पशुपते साक्षात् प्रसन्नो भव ॥ ५८॥

தாமரை நண்பன் ஆதவன், புவி வான் இருளகற்றி ஒளித்திடுவான்; ஆயினும்

பாமரனெனக்கு பலகோடிஆதவன் உள்ளடக்கிய நீ ஒளிகொடுக்கவில்லை இன்னும்,

அய்யகோ என்மன இருள் அத்துனை அடர்த்தியோ உலகாளும் உமையோனே!

மெய்ஞான இருளகற்றி காட்சி கொடுத்தருள் உலகோர்உளம் உறை நாயகனே!

हंसः पद्मवनं समिच्छति यथा नीलाम्बुदं चातकः

कोकः कोकनदप्रियं प्रतिदिनं चन्द्रं चकोरस्तथा ।

चेतो वाञ्छति मामकं पशुपते चिन्मार्गमृग्यं विभो

गौरीनाथ भवत्पदाब्जयुगलं कैवल्यसौख्यप्रदम् ॥ ५९॥

தாமரைத்தடாகம் நாடும் அன்னப் பறவை போல

நீர்மழை மேகம் நோக்கும் சுடலைக்குயில் போல

ஆதவன் உதயம் நோக்கும் வாத்து போல

சந்திரனின் வரவு நோக்கும் செம்போத்து போல

நல்லறிவு காட்டும் பாதையிலே, பேரின்ப

நிலை அடைய வழிதனைக் காட்டும் உன்

பொன்மலர் பாதமிரு நோக்க, என் மனம்

அனுதினமும் விழைகிறதே ஆண்டவனே!

रोधस्तोयहृतः श्रमेण पथिकश्छायां तरोर्वृष्टितो

भीतः स्वस्थगृहं गृहस्थमतिथिर्दीनः प्रभुं धार्मिकम् ।

दीपं सन्तमसाकुलश्च शिखिनं शीतावृतस्त्वं तथा

चेतः सर्वभयापहं व्रज सुखं शम्भोः पदाम्भोरुहम् ॥ ६०॥

ஊழிவெள்ளம் இழுக்கும் மானிடன் கரை காண விழை போல

வழிப்போக்கன் உடல்தளர்வால் மரநிழல் காண விழை போல

மழைநனை மக்கள் உறைகூரை காண விழை போல

வெளியூர் விருந்தினன் இல்லற உறையோன் காண விழை போல

ஏழ்மையில் வாடும் உள்ளம் செல்வந்தன் காண விழை போல

இருளில் அவதியுற்றோன் எரியும் விளக்கு காண விழை போல

குளிரில் துன்புற்றோன் நெருப்பின் தழல் காண விழை போல

மகிழ்வுடன் பயம் அனைத்தும் தவிர்த்து பேரின்பம் பெற

அருள்மிகு சங்கரனின் பொன்மலர்பாதம் காண விழைவாய் என் மனமே!
