Knowledge & Devotion (Sivananda Lahari Verse 61 – 65)

In end August 1970, an LP Gramaphone Record by MS Subbulakshmi with “Bhaja Govindam” on one side and “Vishnu Sahasranamam” on the other side was released. Soon it became part of our family’s LP Record Collections. Not a day passed without listening to these Divine renditions. As a teen, what caught my attention was not these two renditions but the introduction to Bhajagovindam by Sri. C. Rajagopalachari (Rajaji). I was simply bowled over by the crisp voice and the clarity of thoughts (even though I did not understand the content philosophically). Here is what Rajaji said in his introduction:

“Adi Shankara wrote a number of Vedantic works for imparting knowledge of the Self and the Universal Spirit. He also composed a number of hymns to foster bhakti in the hearts of men. One of these hymns is the famous Bhaja Govindam. The way of devotion is not different from the way of knowledge or gnyaana. When intelligence matures and lodges securely in the mind, it becomes wisdom. When wisdom is integrated with life and issues out in action, it becomes bhakti. Knowledge, when it becomes fully mature, is bhakti. If it does not get transformed into bhakti, such knowledge is useless tinsel. To believe that gnyaana and bhakti, knowledge and devotion, are different from each other, is ignorance. If Sri Adi Shankara Himself, who drank the ocean of gyaana as easily as one sips water from the palm of one’s hand, sang in His later years hymns to develop devotion it is enough to show that gnyaanaand bhakti are one and the same. Sri Sankara has packed into the Bhaja Govindam song, the substance of all Vedanta and set the oneness of gnyaana and bhakti to melodious music”.

Never did I realize that nearly 5 decades later, the above talk which simply mesmerized me at that time will come in handy as an introduction to Bhakti, this time for the Verses written by Adi Sankara himself in Sivananda Lahari. Here are the Verses. Here you will see Adi Sankara dwelling in all aspects of Bhakti, Mind, Wisdom and Actions related to the Devotion. These will be presented here and in the rest of the blogs that follows in the subsequent weeks.

Verse 61

अङ्कोलं निजबीजसन्ततिरयस्कान्तोपलं सूचिका

साध्वी नैजविभुं लता क्षितिरुहं सिन्धुः सरिद्वल्लभम् ।

प्राप्नोतीह यथा तथा पशुपतेः पादारविन्दद्वयं

चेतोवृत्तिरुपेत्य तिष्ठति सदा सा भक्तिरित्युच्यते ॥ ६१॥

அங்கோல மரம் சாரும் அழிஞ்சல் விதைகள் போல்

காந்தம் நோக்கி விரையும் இரும்பு ஊசிகள் போல்

கற்புடைப்பெண்டிர் தம் கணவரிடம் சேர்வது போல்

கடலை நோக்கி பெருக்கெடுத்தோடும் நதிகள் போல் – பசுபதியின்

கமலப்பொறபாதங்கள்தனை என்மன எண்ணங்கள் இயல்பென அடைந்து

அல்லலின்றி நிலைத்திட்டால் அந்நிலையன்றோ பக்தி எனப்படும்.

Verse 62

आनन्दाश्रुभिरातनोति पुलकं नैर्मल्यतच्छादनं

वाचा शङ्खमुखे स्थितैश्च जठरापूर्तिं चरित्रामृतैः ।

रुद्राक्षैर्भसितेन देव वपुषो रक्षां भवद्भावना-

पर्यङ्के विनिवेश्य भक्तिजननी भक्तार्भकं रक्षति ॥ ६२॥

மயிர்கூச்சரிய ஆனந்தக்கண்ணீரில் நீராட்டி

மாசிலா மன உடைஅணிவித்து வயிறு நிரப்ப

வாக்குச்சங்கதனில் உன்நாமம்உரைமறை அமிழ்து பாலூட்டி

உருத்திராக்கம் சூட்டி வெந்நீறு பூசி மெய் காத்து

சிவத்தியானத் தொட்டிலில் இட்டுக் காத்திடுவாள் பக்திஅன்னை

பக்தன் எனும் மழழைதனை பரமதேவனே!

Verse 63

मार्गावर्तितपादुका पशुपतेरङ्गस्य कूर्चायते

गण्डूषाम्बुनिषेचनं पुररिपोर्दिव्याभिषेकायते ।

किञ्चिद्भक्षितमांसशेषकबलं नव्योपहारायते

भक्तिः किं न करोत्यहो वनचरो भक्तावतंसायते ॥ ६३॥

நடந்து தேய்ந்த காலனிகள் உன் சிரசில் கூர்சமென

வாய் உமிழ் நீர் முப்புரமெரியோன் நீராட மங்கள நீரென

எச்சிலிட்டு மீந்த புலால் புலித்தோலான் உனக்குப் படையலென

வனவேடன் ஒருவன் உன் உன்னத பக்தனென, ஆச்சரியமன்றோ!

இவ்வுலகில் எதுஒன்று இயலாது எம்பிரான்மேல் பக்தி இருந்தால்

वक्षस्ताडनमन्तकस्य कठिनापस्मारसंमर्दनं

भूभृत्पर्यटनं नमस्सुरशिरःकोटीरसङ्घर्षणम् ।

कर्मेदं मृदुलस्य तावकपदद्वन्द्वस्य गौरीपते

मच्चेतोमणिपादुकाविहरणं शम्भो सदाङ्गीकुरु ॥ ६४॥

காலன் மார் உதைத்து, அறியாமை எனும் அபஸ்மர

அசுரனை மிதித்து, மலைப்பயணமேற்று, அமரர்கூட்டம்

அடிபணி வேளையில் அவர் மகுடகங்கள் உரசிப் புண்படும்

உன் பொன்மலர் பாதமிரண்டின் நோவு தவிர்க்க

என் மனமெனும் மாணிக்க காலணிகள்தனை

அணிந்தருள்வாய் ஆலமுண்டோனே பார்வதி நாயகனே

वक्षस्ताडनशङ्कया विचलितो वैवस्वतो निर्जराः

कोटीरोज्ज्वलरत्नदीपकलिकानीराजनं कुर्वते ।

दृष्ट्वा मुक्तिवधूस्तनोति निभृताश्लेषं भवानीपते

यच्चेतस्तव पादपद्मभजनं तस्येह किं दुर्लभम् ॥ ६५॥

மார் உதைவிசை தாளா காலனின் ஓட்டமென்ன!

மலர் மொக்கென மிளிர் மாணிக்க மகுட ஒளி கொண்டு

கற்பூர ஆராதனை புரியும் தேவரினக் கூட்டமென்ன!

கட்டித் தழுவும் முக்தியெனும் இளமங்கையின் உறவென்ன!

இறைஉன் பொற்பாதம் போற்றி துதிமனம் உடையோர்க்கு,

இயலாதது ஏதும் உண்டோ பவானி நாதனே!
