Mind Over Matter (Sivananda Lahari Verses 20-22)

Universally, cutting across demography, why do we always refer to monkeys when it comes to the description about the fickle minds of humans? Here is one response that I found in the WW Web:

” This monkey quality of the mind follows logically from the evolutionary process in which the primate brain was honed in millions of years of tree dwelling. The arboreal habitat drove the development of visual dominance, color perception, incomparable eye-hand dexterity and much of the underlying hardwiring and intelligence of the human brain. So if our minds are monkey-like, we certainly come by it naturally“.

Continuing the process of prayer, Adi Sankara comes to the most important element – the mind, once again bringing out the existing state of mind in this next three verses

Verse 20

सदा मोहाटव्यां चरति युवतीनां कुचगिरौ

नटत्याशाशाखास्वटति झटिति स्वैरमभितः ।

कपालिन् भिक्षो मे हृदयकपिमत्यन्तचपलं

दृढं भक्त्या बद्ध्वा शिव भवदधीनं कुरु विभो ॥ २०॥

தீயிச்சையெனும் வனத்திலே திக்கெட்டும் கிளைகள் தாவி

இளமங்கையரின் கொங்கைமோகம் கொண்டு குதியாட்டம் போட்டு

மாயைகொண்டு மதிகெட்டு அலையும் என்மனக்குரங்தனை

பக்தியெனும் வடம்கொண்டு கட்டிடுவாய் கயிலைநாதா!

உன்வசப்படுத்து கட்டடங்கா என்மனமதனை கபாலீஸ்வரனே!

Verse 21

धृतिस्तम्भाधारां दृढगुणनिबद्धां सगमनां

विचित्रां पद्माढ्यां प्रतिदिवससन्मार्गघटिताम् ।

स्मरारे मच्चेतःस्फुटपटकुटीं प्राप्य विशदां

जय स्वामिन् शक्त्या सह शिवगणैः सेवित विभो ॥ २१॥

மன்மதனை வென்ற மகேஸ்வரனே! பூத கணங்கள் பூசிக்கும் உலகநாதனே!

தைரியமனும் தூணதனை உறுதிகொண்ட குணங்களெனும் வடம் முறுக்க

மலர்தாமரையென அசைந்தாடி துலங்கும் வெண்நிறக்கூடாரமெனும் என்

மனமதனை அனுதினமும் விரிக்கின்றேன் தூயநெறிப் பாதைமேல்

வந்திருந்து ஆண்டருள்வாய் உமையவளை உடன் கொண்டு, மூவுலகோனே!

Verse 22

प्रलोभाद्यैरर्थाहरणपरतन्त्रो धनिगृहे

प्रवेशोद्युक्तस्सन् भ्रमति बहुधा तस्करपते ।

इमं चेतश्चोरं कथमिह सहे शङ्कर विभो

तवाधीनं कृत्वा मयि निरपराधे कुरु कृपाम् ॥ २२॥

அழுக்காறுஅவாவெகுளி கொண்டு பிறர் பொருளதனைக்கையாண்டிட

செல்வந்தரின் இடம் நுழைய முயன்று வழிதேடி அலைகின்ற என் மனத்தை

எங்கனம் பொறுத்திடுவேன் உலகோரின் உள்ளம் கவர் கள்ளனே!

என் உடல் உள்ளே ஒளிந்திட்ட மனமதனை உன்வசப்படுத்தி

நிரபராதி என்மேல் கருணை கொள்வாய் உலகாளும் சங்கரனே உமைநாதா!
