Carnatic Musing 14 – Ganesh Chathurthi Special 7 – Vathapi Ganapathim – Hamsadhvani

Significance of Vatapi

वातापि – The name of an Asura devoured by Agastya. vāta wind, pā to drink. It also denotes the place “Vatapi”, today called as Badami in Karnataka. Paranjothi, the army chief of Narasimhavarman I (Pallava King), conquered Vatapi the capital of Chalukyas in 642 AD and brought a Ganapati (Ganesh) idol from the vatapi Fort to his native place Tiruchengattangudi. He constructed a Shiva temple where a separate shrine was constructed for installing Vatapi Ganapati. There is also a belief that the shrine in Tiruvarur was installed similar to the one in Tiruchengattangudi. Dikshitar in his composition referred to this Ganapathy in his composition.

  1. The term “bIjapUra” used in the caraNam means “citrus fruit/guava/seed filled as per the dictionary. I had used pomegranate as the fruit here. In the pure sense I should have used a better phrase in Tamil than மாதுளம்பழம். I thank Sri JagatGurudas for the feedback in Twitter.

  2. Woh! What breath control during ‘ Swara Alapane’! Do you know this audio recording is at what age of Vidwan Chembai?
I knew he was capable of extending his ‘Swara Alapane’ much longer than the above recording. Am I wrong?

    1. If you want to have an idea of how much longer can Chembai extend the “swara” here is a link of three part video in YouTube for you to enjoy

Siva Siva ena radha – Pantuvarali
      Chembai, Yesudas – Vocal
      MS Gopalakrishnan – Violin
      TV Gopalakrishnan – Mrudangam
      Alangudi Ramachandran – Ghatam
