Carnatic Musing 19 – Visarjan – Ganesh Chathurthi Special – Conclusion

In this pandemic year 2020, I was fortunate to participate in the Ganesh Chathurthi Festival throughout the 11 days of celebrations through my daily blogs. I feel blessed that Lord Vinayaka provided me an opportunity to focus and improve my learning. Here is a composition by Oothukaadu Venkata Kavi as I bid adieu to Lord Ganesh .

Lord Ganesh is on a procession through the streets before Visarjan. Obviously the tune that comes to our mind is Mallari. This is a classic recital in Mallari (Gambeera Nattai) by Sri. Needamangalam Krishnamurthy Bhagawathar.

Meaning in English

I worship Lord Ganesha, the one who is the remover of all obstacles.

I worship the elephant headed son of Lord Sankara and Sankari.

I worship the handsome elephant faced son of the destroyer of the lord of death.

The foremost among the Devas, Lord Indra pray to Him who is the abode of Virtues; Who Grants boons to His devotees who approach Him through recitation & penance-culminating in samadhi). He is meditated upon by Devas,Rishis & other devotees; He is the Cause of Destruction of poisonous evil (personified as a mad elephant)

He adorns gold armlet and wears a string of pearls. He shines like the snow covered white mountain (Kailash in Himalayas). He removes the dark age sins such as Lust (KAma),arrogance (Mada), irrationality (MooDHa) and dispels Fear/Bhaya, as He is the All-Powerful, Courageoous One). He is praised by saints like Sanaka, S’uka, Narada, Patanjali, Paraashara and Matanga etc. He is the Embodiment of the Ultimate Truth “that you are” (tatvamasi). The lotus eyed lord grants Moksha/Salvation .

Carnatic Musing 15 – Ganesh Chathurthi Special 8 – Sri Maha Ganapatiravatu – Gawlai

Background

The Tamil Classic “Peria Puranam” narrates the incident of Sundaramurti Nayanar immersing 12000 gold coins in the river Manimutharu at a place called Thirumudukundram (near Viruthachalam, Cuddalore) and retrieving gold from the Kamalalaya tank at Tiruvarur and taking the help of this Vinayaka to assess its purity as per the directions of Lord Siva. Hence the Ganesha on the banks of the Kamalalaya Tank in Tiruvarur got the name Mattruraitha Vinakayar (Vinayaka who assayed)

This Kriti is in praise of “Mattruraitha Vinakayar (மாற்று உறைத்த விநாயகர் – Ganesha who evaluates gold and assess its purity) whose shrine is on the banks of the Kamalalaya Tank in Tiruvarur.

Meaning in English

Please protect me the elephant faced Great Ganapathy, the provider of intellect and remover of obstacles.

You are worshipped by the Vishnu, the father of the Lord of Cupid (Manmatha), Brahma and Indra. You reside by the Lotus Tank. You have tender legs and hands like the stem of the water lily. You are the elder brother of Guruguha (Lord Subramanya & the pen name of the composer). You are the son of Lord Siva

The gold assayer and the lord of obstacles with lotus feet and moon on the forehead wears white garments and is praised by human beings and Gods. He has a protuberant belly and holds a water lily, his own tusk, a noose, a goad and steamed sweet meat in his hands. He is the boat that enables humans to cross the oceans of births. His nature is to be the root of the universe (cause). He is the embodiment of immense joy with a radiance brighter as thousand Suns. He is praised by the poets. He rides on a mouse and is worshipped by assembly of gods. He is the abode of eternal liberation.

Carnatic Musing 1 – Lord Ganapathy – Muthuswamy Dikshitar Krithi – Raga Nattai

I begin the blog series with a prayer to Lord Ganesh by Sri. Muthuswamy Dīkshitar (with a pen name Guruguha), one of the Trinity of Carnatic Music. This composition in Raga Nattai in the 17th Century, is still one of the most sought after one by musicians across the world. The undercurrent of Nattai raga and the effervescence of the lyrics have withstood the test of time though hundreds of adaptations and fusions that have been tried out by scores of musicians.

Lord Ganesha

As I conclude Adi Sankara’s Pancha Rathnamala on Lord Ganesh, my memories went several decades back to my childhood days and the number of “Thoppukaranams” that I use to do before each exam in the schools. This is an age old practice prevalent for centuries in India, more particularly in South of India. Modern day Western World calls it “Super Brain Yoga” now and has converted this practice into a money making health exercise.

I also used to wonder about the number of alternate names that He has and the number of shapes and sizes that He manifests at different homes.

Even today as I google, I see 25.8 Million images of Lord Ganesha in a span of 0.67 seconds and there are a minimum of 108 alternate names for Him.

Here is one such simple image that I thought should be shared.
